When considering new windows for your home, many different factors come into play:

The location and type of window can play a HUGE role when deciding between these factors. For example, for ground-level windows in open rooms such as the dining room or living room, you want expansive, open-viewing windows that let in a lot of light and are easy to clean. For bedrooms, you may want windows that can open and close quickly.

HEX can advise you on every type of window, and the advantages and disadvantages of each class. That way you can make the most informed decision possible when it comes to the new windows in your home.

With all the choices out there, we understand homeowners who may be confused when choosing which type of windows they would like to go with. Several factors come into play when choosing your new windows. You may consider energy efficiency, noise reduction, weatherproofing, warranty, aesthetics, and much more.

    Double Hung Windows

A double-hung window is comprised of two distinct panes, also known as “sashes” that are placed back-to-back with each other. The unique part of a double hung window is that the top sash can be slid down to open from the top, or the bottom sash can be slid upwards to open from the bottom. This provides the unique ability to create air flow from the top and bottom of the window. A latching mechanism can lock either or both panes in place.

    Casement Windows

A casement window is the type of window that opens similar to how a door might open. The window is hinged on one side, and opens to the right or left depending on which side the hinge is one. Generally, casement windows are larger windows that provide a great view of the outdoors and can open wide to let in air from the outside.

    Awning Windows

An awning window is a window that opens, in a way, similar to a garage door. The window is hinged at the top of the frame, allowing it to open from the bottom. In general, awning windows have a large viewing area inside the frame and are ideal for letting in a large amount of air flow quite easily.

    Sliding Windows

A sliding window is usually comprised of two distinct panes (or “sashes”) that slide from left to right (or right to left) so the window can be opened from the side and provide full top-to-bottom ventilation. Some sliding windows are able to open from either side, depending on the type and style. Due to the sliding nature of the windows, they are extremely easy to open and provide great ventilation without sacrificing glass area.

    Picture Windows

A picture window is a large, thinly-framed window that takes up a large space on the wall, and opens up the room for more light and aesthetic. The window has no opening mechanism, so it is not ideal for ventilation, but often times a picture window is combined in a set with other windows such as casement windows to create a large, beautiful window space that can also ventilate the room.

    Bay Windows

Bay/bow windows – also known as projection windows – are comprised of three or more sides. The main window is parallel to the wall and provides beautiful viewing of the outdoors, while the other sides are angled back towards the adjoining wall. These windows project outwards from the room, adding space and unmatched viewing of the outdoors.

    Specialty Shaped Windows

A specialty window can cover basically any window shape that isn’t standard. This includes arch windows, circular or semi-circular windows, triangular, or many other shapes. Specialty windows generally don’t have sashes or different pane configurations because of the custom nature of the shape, so opening and closing the window is rarely a concern. This makes specialty windows just as energy efficient as any other window you might add to your home.

    Custom Windows

A custom window is essentially any window that isn’t part of a standard window design. While every window that is made is custom to your home, custom windows specifically refers to unique shapes, styles, or sizes that are made to match the exact specifications of your home. This is because stock windows may not match the aesthetic of a home, so custom windows might be required for a more targeted aesthetic.
