Carmichael's Premier Interior Design Projects by HEX

Hex General Contractors’ in-house interior designers and team of craftsmen recently transformed this elegant living area in Carmichael, CA into a warm, welcoming, and sophisticated space. With an emphasis on natural light, neutral tones, and cozy yet contemporary furnishings, the project seamlessly integrates modern comfort with a classic aesthetic. The homeowners (and our designers) were very pleased with how it turned out! Here's a breakdown of the key design elements and the benefits of the materials and style choices made by the homeowners and our design team. Feel free to read through to gain an idea of how your experience will be with our in-house interior design team here at Hex.

Living Room Design Elements:

The homeowners came to us, wanting to freshen up their space but also wanting to embrace the character of their home - the large windows, the open floor plan, and the fireplace at the center of it all that admittedly needed updating. Our design team looked over their photos and then went for an in-person look to get a feel for the space, hear out the homeowners in more detail, and go over the specifics with what they would recommend and how the process would look.

1. Warm and Inviting Flooring:

  • The homeowners wanted new flooring so they chose to have wide-plank oak hardwood flooring installed throughout, which adds warmth and a timeless aesthetic to the room.

  • The natural wood tones bring out the bright, airy feel of the room and help anchor the lighter, more neutral elements. This really adds to the coziness appeal of the entire area.

Benefits:

  • Durability: Oak hardwood is known for its durability and resilience, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like living and dining rooms.

  • Timeless Appeal: The wide planks and warm tone of the wood create a classic look that will remain stylish for years to come.

2. Feature Fireplace Wall:

  • The centerpiece of the living room is the new gas fireplace framed by a custom white shiplap wall and topped with a solid wood mantel, all built and installed by our team. This combination of textures offers a striking contrast to the sleek, contemporary furniture and enhances the room’s focal point.

Benefits:

  • Cozy Ambiance: The gas fireplace creates an inviting atmosphere, perfect for family gatherings or quiet nights where a quick flip of the switch will save time compared to a wood-burning fireplace.

  • Modern Yet Rustic: The shiplap provides a rustic charm, while the minimalist mantel and fireplace maintain a clean, modern look.

3. Thoughtful Lighting Design:

  • The former ceiling lighting was outdated so the area is now illuminated by recessed ceiling lights, providing soft, even lighting throughout the space. The lighting highlights the design features without overwhelming the room.

Benefits:

  • Balanced Lighting: The recessed lighting helps avoid shadows and creates a more balanced, cozy glow throughout the room.

  • Energy Efficient: Using modern, energy-efficient lighting reduces power consumption while still offering bright, warm illumination.

4. Open Concept with Natural Light:

  • Large windows along one side of the room bring in ample natural light, making the space feel open and connected to the outdoors. The adjacent dining area, seamlessly integrated into the living space, ensures that the entire area flows naturally, creating a sense of openness and continuity. This existing layout really helped our designers envision a room that would be both welcoming, bright, and functional all at the same time.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced Space: Natural light from the windows makes the living room appear larger and more inviting, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Seamless Transition: The open-concept design between the living and dining areas allows for easy movement and a great setup for entertaining guests.

5. Neutral, Stylish Furnishings:

  • The interior design team selected a neutral color palette with soft greys, tans, and whites to create a versatile and sophisticated foundation for the room. The furniture they found (and the homeowners now really enjoy!) includes mid-century modern leather chairs and plush upholstered seating, providing comfort without sacrificing style.

Benefits:

  • Versatility: The neutral color palette serves as a perfect backdrop for adding accent colors, textures, or seasonal décor without clashing.

  • Comfort and Style: The combination of leather and upholstered seating offers both comfort and elegance, ensuring the living room is functional for everyday use as well as entertaining.

Estimated Timeline:

This type of interior remodel and design would typically take 6 weeks, including:

  • Initial Consultation and Planning: 1 week

  • Flooring Installation: 1 week

  • Lighting, Fireplace, and Shiplap Feature Wall Construction: 2 weeks

  • Furniture Selection and Layout: 1 week
